This kit consists of a 6 inch long x 1 inch high backlight module, along with a PCB that mounts to the back of the module and contains a MM5451 LED driver IC and other components needed to drive the display.
This backlight module uses 80 red/green bi-colour surface-mount LEDs arranged into 16 groups of 5. The module is wired in such a way that you have 16 (2 x 8) individually addressable 'pixels', each of which can be off, red, green, or both colours at once to give orange.
The PCB also has provision for either an 8 pin or 18 pin microcontroller, and the kit will be available with a Picaxe 08M micro as an option. No microcontroller is provided with the standard kit.
Data and clock lines (the only lines needed to control the driver IC) are also brought out to a header for use with external micros - you could even drive this display from your PC! There is also an on-board trimpot for brightness adjustment.
Imagine the possibilities with this kit. Use it as a 16 way status display, a large 3-colour bargraph display, anything you want really.
Note: The diffuser on the backlight module is easily removed (destructively).
